Concept, Projection, Installation
GO BY FUTURE
What's possible for the near future of transit?
Light installation augmenting a train station with data-driven arrival times. Go by transit? Let's go by future.
For two nights, we augmented the Washington Park Tri-Met station with interactive data-driven animations powered by their API, showing precise arrival and departure times of the trains.
Portland Park & Recreation reached out to me, wanting to add some sort of fun light installation to the light rail station across from the Oregon Zoo during holiday Zoo Lights festivities.
I developed a concept that pushed beyond a pretty show, to a function-first imagination of the future of transit. For riders to quickly see exactly how many minutes until each train, we used the architecture itself— blocks to minutes, attributing each side to east/westbound, with directional animations showing which direction was arriving. The red/blue color scheme changed dynamically depending on which train was next to arrive.
The final installation brought attention to this lesser known transit station, and highlighted the reliability that our public transit system has to offer.
Special thanks to my project collaborator Ian LeBlanc who implemented the live data API and assisted with show programming, setup, and mapping.
